Don “Red” Edwards’ career in coaching began 65 years ago (as of 2025) when he started coaching the boys’ track and field team at Big Walnut in 1957.
Red, as he was known by nearly everyone, was responsible for many of the programs enjoyed by athletes today. He began the girls’ track and field program in 1974, after coaching the women’s division of the Ohio Track Club in Central Ohio for several years. He was the founder of the Sunbury Track club. He started the boys’ cross country team in 1967 and the girls’ cross country program in 1978. He started the middle school cross country programs in 1985. In his time as a coach, he led many young men and women to qualify and/or place in the state tournaments.

In 1978, Red created the Golden Eagle Relays which now and will always proudly display his name as the Red Edwards’ Golden Eagle Relays.
During his illustrious career, Red had received many awards and recognitions from around the state in track and field and cross country: 1979 Cross Country Central District Coach of the Year, 2002 OATCCC Distinguished Service Award; in 2012, he received the “Ed Barker Award” for his outstanding contributions to track and field; he was the first inductee into the Big Walnut Wall of Fame in 2002; and Red was inducted into the OCC Hall of Fame in 2016.
Besides coaching, Red was the owner and curator of the Big Walnut Track and Field Museum. He proudly exhibited many of the items of his collection at the annual OATCCC coaches clinic every year as Ohio’s Track and Field historian, and you can see some of his collection displayed beside the athletic office in the high school.
With all of that said, there are three things you need to know about Red Edwards. 1) he loved track and field, and cross country, 2) he loved Big Walnut, and 3) he loved the Sunbury community. And he loved them like no other before or since or probably ever again.
