The John Scanlan Memorial Scholarship was established to honor the memory of John Scanlan III, a devoted husband, father, and community member.
John met his wife, Nicci (Quelette), at The Ohio State University, where their story began. After graduating, they returned to Nicci’s hometown in the Big Walnut community, where they raised their two children, Griffin and Madison Scanlan.

John quickly immersed himself in the community, volunteering his time and talents to coaching youth sports, including football, basketball, softball, and soccer. As a dedicated physician assistant, he also served others by donating his time to the free clinic offered by the Vineyard Church in Sunbury. When John wasn’t spending time with his family, he could often be found on the golf course or passionately training for triathlon races—a hobby he shared with his extended family.
Tragically, John passed away from a sudden cardiac arrest in 2008. This scholarship seeks to honor his legacy by supporting the aspirations of students in the Big Walnut community, reflecting his deep commitment to giving back and uplifting others. Through this scholarship, we celebrate John’s love for his family, his community, and his enthusiasm for life.
